HF Radar (High Frequency) operates at HF frequencies and is used to study disturbances that occur in the F-layer —which can cause communication failures between Earth and and communications satellites or global positioning satellites (GPS)— and track the behavior of Layer F. The study of these disturbances can allow a better understanding of them so later their behavior can be predicted.
HF radar has six operational reception stations installed at the Huancayo Observatory of IGP, the Radio Observatory of Jicamarca, the district of Mala (south of Lima), the district of Barranca (north of Lima), in La Oroya (Junín) and La Merced; It also has three transmission stations located at IGP Ancon Observatory, the National University of Ica (UNICA) and the Sicaya Observatory of IGP.
