INTERNATIONAL GEOSPATIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE PROGRAM<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Ministry of Environment (Minam), through the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), is pleased to announce its annual International Research Experience Program (IREP_IGP) held at the Jicamarca Geophysical Observatory (formerly known as Jicamarca Radio Observatory) in Lima, Peru. This program began in 2006 and is geared towards undergraduate and graduate students who wish to gain experience in radar technology and scientific instrumentation for geospace research and is sponsored by the National Science Foundation through Cornell University with local collaboration from Ciencia Internacional
The IGP advances its mission to deepen understanding of the equatorial atmosphere and ionosphere, as well as low latitudes and the systems to which they are coupled, by fostering the creation of cutting-edge radar and radiodetection techniques, to train and educate new generations of space physicists, scientists and technicians to expand their own capabilities through upgrading and invention, and to increase their influence internationally.
Students will work with the engineers and scientists on projects related to new or ongoing research. These research may be conducted in ionospheric and neutral atmosphere science, as well as radar\/radio instrumentation and software development. Given its location, radar operating frequency and array system, most of IGP\u2019s research capabilities are unique. For example, this is the best place in the world where radar images of atmospheric and ionospheric phenomena can be learned and explored. In addition to the unique research capabilities where students can propose and perform their own experiments. The IGP offers a good opportunity to get hands-on experience in different aspects of radar systems, from changing antenna connections, upgrading the RF components of the system, to developing sophisticated acquisition and processing programs. Students will also be exposed to frequent lectures and seminars given by staff and visiting scientists. In addition, students will also give presentations at the beginning and end of their experience. An additional benefit of the program is that students will learn about Peru, heir to millenary cultures and rich colonial tradition.<\/p>
